The USS Lake Erie launches a Standard Missile-3 at a non-functioning National Reconnaissance Office satellite as it traveled in space at more than 17,000 mph over the Pacific Ocean February 20, 2008 in this handout photo released by the U.S. Defense Department. A missile from a U.S. Navy warship hit a defunct U.S. spy satellite 133 nautical miles (247 km) above the Earth in an attempt to blow apart its tank of toxic fuel, the Pentagon said on Wednesday. A Standard Missile Three (SM-3) is launched aboard the Pearl Harbor based Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70) during a US Navy ballistic missile flight test. China called on the United States Thursday to provide information about its shooting down of a defunct US spy satellite and voiced caution about the potential international impact of the operation.

High seas reported Wednesday in the north Pacific posed an obstacle as the Lake Erie prepared to launch a three-stage missile to shoot down a dying and potentially deadly U.S. spy satellite

This picture released by the US Navy shows Fire Controlman 2nd Class John Whitby operating the radar system control during a ballistic missile defense drill, February 16, aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie. The US prepared Wednesday to shoot down a broken US spy satellite before it tumbles into Earth's atmosphere, a mission that could show the world its anti-satellite capabilities

In this April 26, 2007 picture provided by the U.S. Navy, a Standard Missile-2 (SM-2) is launched from the Pearl Harbor-based guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie as part of a Missile Defense Agency test in the Pacific Ocean. The government issued notices to aviators and mariners to remain clear of a section of the Pacific beginning at 10:30 p.m. EST Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008 indicating the first window of opportunity to launch an SM-3 missile from the USS Lake Erie, in an effort to hit a crippled U.S. spy satellite.
